BIAFD visits British Steel Wire Rod Mill  (11 June, 2018)

Thirty one BIAFD members visited British Steel in Scunthorpe for presentations on steel and wire rod productions, followed by a full tour of the Wire Rod Mill. The tour, mainly along an overhead walkway, follows the progress of the material from reheat furnace through breakdown, roughing, intermediate and finishing stands, which convert a bloom of weighing more than 4 tonnes to wire rod between 5.5 and 17mm diameter. As the wire approaches the coiler and drops onto the Stelmor cooling conveyor it is travelling at about the same speed as Usain Bolt in full flow. BIAFD delegates also visited the automated coil warehouse and wrapper, designed to ensure the finished 2 tonne coils arrive with customers in the best possible condition.
British Steel Scunthorpe is an integrated steel works, producing iron from ore in blast furnaces, and ensuring precise composition of steel for a wide array of final products, using the basic oxygen system.
The visit this June is one of several arranged over the last five years in a long term educational partnership between BIAFD and British Steel - which means more than 120 BIAFD members have now had the rare opportunity to see first-hand the massive scale engineering processes that provide the raw material for most fasteners. BIAFD is extremely grateful to everyone at British Steel who helps to ensure a highly informative and safe visit.
BIAFD also arranges educational visits to other key fastener making process and is currently planning visits to a cold forming and thread rolling operation and also a coating facility.
